As a dad of two thrill-seeking boys, I’ve always been a fan of pushing the limits, especially when it comes to family adventures. And what’s more thrilling than a night of pure, unadulterated terror at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights?
This year, I’m taking my boys, Will, Thomas and Lucas, on their first HHN experience. They’ve been begging for it for years, and I’m finally ready to unleash them on the horrors that await.
The Haunted Houses: A Nightmare on Every Corner
The heart of HHN is the haunted houses. These immersive mazes are filled with terrifying creatures, jump scares, and special effects that will leave you screaming for mercy. Here are a few of the must-see haunted houses for this year:
- A Quiet Place: Silence your screams if you want to survive the terrifying, post-apocalyptic world. Like the Abbott family, you must keep quiet as you travel from the farmhouse to the woods, to the foundry. As soon as you make a sound, monstrous creatures who can hear the slightest noise, will hunt you down and silence you for good.
- Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire: A bone-chilling new specter has escaped from an ancient artifact, and he’ll stop you cold. The Ghostbusters must team up to save you and the rest of the world from a second Ice Age.
- Insidious: The Further: Don’t get trapped in The Further as terrifying demons try to ensnare you. Enter the Red-Faced Demon’s lair behind The Red Door. And try to keep away from KeyFace, so he can’t lock up your spirit.
Beyond the Haunted Houses: Terror Lurks Everywhere
The haunted houses are just the beginning. Throughout Universal Studios Orlando, you’ll encounter terrifying scare zones filled with roaming monsters, actors, and special effects. Here are a few of the scare zones you’ll want to explore:
- Enter the Blumhouse Run: A terrifying gauntlet of Blumhouse characters. From The Grabber to M3GAN dancing into your nightmares, this is a new kind of horror.
- Torture Faire: Come one, come all, to the renaissance faire. Brave the gloriously gory medieval torture devices ‘til you’re put out of your misery.
- Duality of Fear: As soon as you enter Halloween Horror Nights you must choose a path: the visceral horror of SINIST3R or the unearthly terror of SURR3AL.
Live Shows: A Frightening Feast for the Senses
In addition to the haunted houses and scare zones, Halloween Horror Nights also features live shows that are sure to entertain and terrify. Here are some of this year’s live shows:
- Nightmare Fuel: Nocturnal Circus: Step right up to a dark circus, a new nightmare that carries with it a sinister curse. It’s a thrilling spectacle of pyro and aerialists.
Tips for Surviving Halloween Horror Nights
- Go in Groups: The camaraderie of friends can help you face your fears.
- Start in the Back: The haunted houses near the front of the park tend to get crowded first.
- Visit Early: September is typically less crowded than October.
- Use Express Passes: If you want to skip the lines, consider purchasing Express Passes.
- Stay Hydrated: Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, especially on warm nights.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Chicken Out: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to skip a haunted house or scare zone.
Making the Most of Your Halloween Horror Nights Experience

One of the best things about Halloween Horror Nights is that it’s a great way to bond with your family. Sharing the fear and excitement together creates a unique shared experience that you’ll cherish for years to come.
As a dad, I love seeing my boys push themselves outside of their comfort zone. It’s a proud moment to watch them face their fears and conquer their challenges. And the shared laughter and relief we experience together are priceless.
